Binh Duong: Mangosteen price increases due to sharp decrease in output

26/06/2024 - Tỉnh Bình Dương

Mangosteen output in Binh Duong plummeted by 70-80% due to prolonged heat, making supply scarce, pushing up the price of ripe mangosteen, grade 1 ranging from 130,000-145,000 VND/kg.

This year, the mangosteen harvest situation in Binh Duong, especially in Lai Thieu area, Thuan An city, has many big fluctuations.
Unlike previous years, along the roads in Lai Thieu area there are no longer mangosteen fruits, the main reason is due to prolonged hot weather, causing mangosteen productivity and output to decrease sharply by 70-80%. .
Mangosteen has long been considered a specialty fruit of the Southeast region and especially in Thuan An, Binh Duong, Lai Thieu mangosteen is famous for its special delicious flavor.
However, Mr. Tran Van Vien, Director of An Son Agricultural Service Cooperative (An Son commune, Thuan An city), said that because the mangosteen growing area in Binh Duong and other provinces and cities is quite small, So when faced with adverse weather, output is seriously affected.
In Thuan An, mangosteen growing area is mainly concentrated in Lai Thieu, An Son, Hung Dinh, Binh Nham wards with about 600 hectares, accounting for more than half of the total orchard area of the entire city.
This season, mangosteen production decreased by up to 80%. An Son agricultural service cooperative has 21 hectares of mangosteen growing, harvesting about 30 tons each year to supply domestic and foreign markets.
However, this year, output decreased sharply, causing mangosteen to not be enough to supply markets and shops, so it could only be harvested in moderation.
The scarcity of mangosteen also brings many problems. Mr. Vien warns that scams have appeared in groups such as the Vietnam Mangosteen Association (23,200 members) and Mangosteen Lai Thieu (25,700 members).
Some people take advantage of this situation to swap goods and sell substandard quality mangosteen. Currently, the price of grade 1 ripe mangosteen ranges from 130,000-145,000 VND/kg.
Along with that, mangosteen chicken salad is a "trend" causing the demand and price of mangosteen to increase. Since the beginning of the season, when some Lai Thieu mangosteen gardens were still young, the price of green mangosteen has reached 90,000-120,000 VND/kg.
The price of green mangosteen, the unshelled type, ranges from 90,000-100,000 VND/kg and the pre-peeled type ranges from 350,000-400,000 VND/kg. In some places, prices are much higher due to scarcity.
Mr. Dang Kim Quy, a mangosteen grower with over 15 years of experience in An Son commune, Thuan An city, shared that mangosteen trees usually bear fruit around Tet or the 12th lunar month and are harvested from late April to May. 5 lunar calendar. But this year, prolonged sunshine has greatly affected fruit setting, causing many trees to lose young fruit.
Mr. Quy also said that many gardeners decide to sell green mangosteen early, right at the beginning of the season because when the fruit is ripe, the rate of damage is high and the price is not as high as green mangosteen.
However, he does not encourage selling too much young mangosteen because it will affect the next crop's output.
In 2016, the People's Committee of Binh Duong province issued Decision No. 3265 approving the urban agriculture development project in the southern region of Binh Duong province for the period 2016-2020, supporting nearly 50 billion VND through support policies. Supporting the maintenance and development of specialty fruit orchards from 2007-2021.
However, some goals of the project such as developing fruit tree areas combined with ecotourism were implemented slowly and did not meet the set goals.
Mangosteen is known as the 'queen of fruits' because it offers many health benefits due to its unique supply of nutrients, fiber and antioxidants.
From the end of 2021, this policy is no longer implemented. Rising prices of agricultural inputs, especially fertilizers, are also the cause of decreased mangosteen productivity. Farmers cannot afford to provide the full amount of fertilizer needed for crops.
Mr. Pham Van Bong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Duong province, said that the Department will propose to the Provincial People's Committee not to continue building the urban agriculture development project in the southern region of Binh Duong province during the period. The next phase is due to rapid urbanization reducing the area of fruit tree areas associated with ecotourism.
Instead, the agricultural sector will base on the plan to develop agricultural, forestry and fishery industries and products in the planning of Binh Duong province for the period 2021-2030 to build plans and implement integrated agricultural development. urban industry with existing key programs and plans of the industry./.
