Mr. Huynh Quang Duc, Deputy Director of the Ben Tre Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that preparing for Vietnam's fresh coconuts to be officially exported to the US market is a long and challenging process. After being approved by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Department (APHIS) under the US Department of Agriculture, Ben Tre province will immediately promote the development of raw material areas, while improving the quality of the production chain with the foundation of cooperative groups and cooperatives.
In addition, Ben Tre province will increase technical transfer, guidance, and update information for coconut growers and businesses to clearly understand and comply with standards and regulations on official export goods. Regularly inspect and monitor the implementation of standards and management requirements for growing area codes, packaging facilities... according to regulations.
Mr. Huynh Quang Duc added that, in addition to the US market, it is expected that negotiations on official coconut exports to China will also have results at the end of this year, early 2024. The expansion of official exports to China will also be successful. The two markets of China and the US have created great motivation for businesses inside and outside the province to participate in registering to develop planting area codes and packaging facility codes that meet export standards, opening up a very bright future for the coconut industry. of the province in particular and Vietnam in general.
Considered the coconut capital of the country, the total coconut area in Ben Tre province is currently estimated at 78,310 hectares, an increase of 1.35% over the same period last year. The increase in coconut area over the same period is due to some other crop areas being ineffective or no longer suitable for the farming area, so people switched to growing coconut because coconut trees are easy to grow and require less effort and care costs. . The increase in area is mainly in the area of drinking green Siamese coconut because its efficiency is quite stable compared to some other crops. The total area of green drinking water coconut in the province is currently about 15,865 hectares, accounting for 20.53% of the total coconut area.
Total coconut production in July 2023 is estimated to be 51,232 tons, cumulative coconut production to date is estimated at 401,545 tons, an increase of 3.90% over the same period, of which Siamese coconut production in the month is estimated to be 11 million fruits, Accumulated number of fruits in 7 months of 2023 is 94.6 million. The price of dried coconut in July is relatively stable, currently the price of dried coconut ranges from 40,000 - 50,000 VND/12 fruits.
Focus on building sustainable coconut raw material areas
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province Huynh Quang Duc said that up to now, the whole province has built 6 pilot concentrated coconut production areas. Of which 5 production areas follow organic standards and 1 area produces drinking water coconuts. After a period of building the coconut value chain, up to now the whole province has 32 cooperative groups and 28 cooperatives participating in linking and organizing production with the companionship of 9 large enterprises in the coconut product chain. From these business-linked models, hundreds of coconut processing facilities have been formed, creating many jobs for local workers.
From the beginning of 2023 until now, the province has developed an additional 554 hectares of organic coconut, bringing the total area of coconut produced according to organic standards to 17,846 hectares (accounting for 22.9% of the total coconut area in the province), of which Certified area is 11,418 hectares. In particular, the area certified organic according to standards of the US, Japan, EU, China, Korea... is constantly maintained and developed every year even though investment funds for development and management are renewed. certification is quite large.
According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Canh, the locality determined that building a concentrated coconut production area associated with developing the coconut value chain is one of the key tasks, contributing to accelerating the progress of implementing the Target Program. The country builds new rural areas and restructures the agricultural sector. In particular, the province is focusing on strengthening propaganda about the purpose and meaning of linked production and organic production, mobilizing people to convert to coconut production according to organic standards, and participating in joint ventures. Establishment of planting area codes...
At the same time, strengthen training and transfer of organic coconut farming techniques to coconut growers to apply in practical production.
