Lam Dong avocado season is harvested from April to November every year with a variety of varieties, but most of the fresh fruit output is purchased by traders on a small scale from the garden to distribute to other localities. While there is still a lack of large-capacity avocado purchasing, preliminary processing and processing facilities associated with a stable consumer market, more fundamental solutions are needed.
Many farmers in Lam Dong have researched and applied technical solutions to change the harvesting time of avocado products from main season to off-season, achieving higher economic value.
• AVOCADO PRODUCTION IN THE WHOLE PROVINCE IS ABOUT 80,000 TONS/YEAR
Statistics show that the total avocado area in the province to date has reached 8,067 hectares, of which the 034 avocado area accounts for the largest proportion with 81.3% (6,557 hectares), concentrated mainly in the districts of Bao Lam (2,371 hectares), Di Di Linh (2,782 hectares), Lam Ha (440 hectares), Duc Trong (390 hectares) and Bao Loc City (418 hectares). Next, with a rate of 11.2% (900 hectares), Booth avocados are allocated to Lam Ha district (530 hectares), Duc Trong district (110 hectares) and Da Lat city (95.2 hectares). The remaining 7.5% of other avocado varieties (610 hectares) are cultivated in many different agricultural areas. Most of the avocado growing area in the whole province is planted in intercropping, accounting for 87%, pure farming accounts for 13%.
Of the total avocado output in the province of about 80,000 tons/year, avocado output 034 accounts for the largest proportion with 81%; Next, Booth butter accounts for 11.5% and other types of butter account for 7.5%. Each avocado variety in Lam Dong has different biological characteristics and harvest time from April to November. This is an advantage in supplying a diverse range of avocados to the market in Lam Dong compared to other localities with Harvest time is shorter, usually only lasting from June to August.
“Lam Dong is suitable for avocado trees to grow commonly in Bao Loc City, Bao Lam, Di Linh, Duc Trong, Lam Ha districts and some areas of Da Lat City. In the 2000s and earlier, avocado trees were mainly grown as shade trees, land boundary trees, and trees grown on bare land in the garden. Over time, avocado trees have become a crop that brings income to many businesses, cooperatives, cooperative groups and farmer households in the area...", Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development assessed. .
However, according to the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, with a total avocado output of about 80,000 tons/year mentioned above, the entire province currently only has Van Phuong Agricultural Products Company Limited purchasing, pre-processing and processing. 600 tons/year of avocado for domestic consumption. And the frozen avocado output of Blaofood Co., Ltd. is 1,000 - 2,000 tons/year, Hikari Da Lat Joint Stock Company is 40 tons/year, Thuan Thanh Import-Export Production and Trading Co., Ltd. is 300 - 400 tons/year, exported to the United States. , Europe, Korea and China. In addition, the whole province has 80 avocado purchasing establishments with about 13,000 tons/year, supplying most of the domestic market, with a small portion exported via unofficial channels to Thailand and Cambodia. The remaining avocado output is consumed through traders from neighboring provinces and cities and farmers sell it themselves to traditional customers and on social platforms, resulting in unstable income. As in 2019, the price of avocados in the province from an average of 53,000 VND/kg, by 2023 will drop to 15,000 VND/kg. In 2023 alone, the price of avocado will decrease from 25,000 VND/kg at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season to 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg in the main season.
• TO AVOID SEASONAL PRESSURE
The reason why the output of Lam Dong avocado products is still unstable is that in recent years, the area and output of 034 avocados have increased rapidly, and the price has dropped sharply in the main season from May to June. Furthermore, 034 avocados have thin skins. , the storage time is short, so it is not eligible for export in large quantities. Meanwhile, frozen avocado products are in the testing phase, with insignificant output. At some times, farmers pick young avocados to supply the market, affecting the province's 034 avocado brand. Not to mention the chain of links between farmers and businesses, cooperatives, purchasing, preliminary processing, and processing establishments associated with avocado product consumption is not tight.
Solution in the coming time, the whole province will research, transfer and apply technical measures to extend harvest time to increase product value and reduce crop pressure. It encourages the development of avocado production areas according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, Organic certification standards, to improve the quality and brand of Lam Dong avocados.
The whole province also needs to upgrade and expand the scale of avocado production and consumption chains to ensure food safety and traceability; At the same time, effectively deploy mechanisms and policies to attract businesses to boldly invest in innovating machinery, equipment and technology systems, improving primary processing capacity, diversifying processing products, creating added value. increase for avocado. In addition, apply HACCP and ISO quality management systems in avocado processing facilities according to international standards, creating favorable conditions for export activities.
“The state management agency acts as a bridge and organizes businesses, cooperatives, and farmers to meet, exchange, and unify mechanisms, standards, and prices for purchasing avocado products. Thereby orienting solutions to determine the floor price of products, support when avocado prices are low or profit sharing plans when market prices increase...", Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized. Cooperative solution to stabilize the Lam Dong avocado consumption market.
