Agricultural production in the 1st quarter of 2024 continued to grow stably. Pig and poultry farming is well developed; forestry production to promote forest planting, care and protection; aquaculture activities achieved positive results...
Agriculture still affirms its role as a "pillar" of the economy, ensuring the supply of food, food and essential goods.
According to the report of the General Statistics Office, agricultural production in the first quarter of 2024 continued to grow steadily. Pig and poultry farming developed well, and the disease was controlled. Forestry production promotes the planting, care and protection of forests, and harvests timber until the logging period. Aquaculture activities have achieved positive results.
INCREASED RICE AND FRUIT PRODUCTION
Regarding the situation of rice production, the General Statistics Office said that as of the middle of March 2024, the whole country had cultivated 2,926.1 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, down 1.3 thousand hectares compared to the winter-spring crop in 2023.
In which, the Northern localities reached 1,032 thousand hectares, down 12.5 thousand hectares compared to the winter-spring crop last year, mainly due to the conversion of land use purposes to non-agricultural land such as building industrial clusters, building highways or switching to planting fruit trees for higher economic value.
Currently, the northern localities are taking care of winter-spring rice to ensure smooth growth of rice plants, achieve the optimal branching rate and focus on preventing pests and diseases.
This year, the southern localities cultivated 1,894.1 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, an increase of 11.2 thousand hectares compared to the winter-spring crop in 2023. The area of winter-spring rice cultivation in the southern localities has increased due to the stable high price of rice, so people are assured to take advantage of the maximum area and invest in high-quality and high-yield rice varieties.
Up to this point, the Mekong Delta region has harvested 868.8 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, accounting for 58.8% of the cultivated area and equal to 106.1% of the same period last year, the yield is estimated to be approximately the same as the winter-spring crop of the previous year; output is estimated at 10.7 million tons, an increase of 65 thousand tons.
"The harvest output of some perennial trees in the first quarter of 2024 increased compared to the same period last year due to favorable weather and stable product prices. Specifically, some perennial industrial trees: Rubber reached 134.1 thousand tons, up 2.7% over the same period last year; cashews reached 230 thousand tons, up 1.7%; tea buds reached 173.3 thousand tons, up 0.5%".
According to the General Statistics Office.
For the rice crop, as of mid-March 2024, the Mekong Delta region has completed the harvest of the 2023-2024 crop. The area of seasonal rice cultivation of the whole region reached 183.1 thousand hectares, an increase of 5.2 thousand hectares compared to the previous year's crop.
This year's crop has relatively favorable weather, less affected by salinity intrusion, people use rice varieties suitable for soil conditions along with enhanced disease prevention and control, so the yield is high with 53.7 quintals/ha, an increase of 2.3 quintals/ha compared to the previous year's crop. output reached 974.4 thousand tons, an increase of 60.3 thousand tons.
For fruit trees, due to the implementation of crop restructuring, reducing the area of inefficient perennial trees such as pineapple and dragon fruit to planting trees for higher economic efficiency. Compared to the same period last year, the output of some trees increased considerably such as: Durian reached 108.1 thousand tons, up 27.1%; oranges reached 323.3 thousand tons, up 4.1%; bananas reached 697 thousand tons, up 3.8%; mangoes reached 191 thousand tons, up 3.6%; pomelo reached 167.3 thousand tons, up 3.1%. Particularly, dragon fruit production reached 324.1 thousand tons, down 4.7% over the same period last year; pineapple reached 200.7 thousand tons, down 4.1%.
For the field of animal husbandry, buffalo and cattle breeding tends to decrease due to low economic efficiency and shrinking grazing area. Meanwhile, pig and poultry farming developed well, epidemics were controlled, the selling price of live pork increased, production achieved higher economic efficiency when reducing the scale of production in small households and developing large-scale livestock enterprises with closed processes with lower production costs.
However, farmers still need to closely monitor the market situation, the authorities need to provide timely information, control the situation of livestock in the locality, should not massively increase the herd, leading to an oversupply, a deep decline in selling prices, causing losses.
AREA OF AFFORESTATION DECREASED SLIGHTLY
According to the report of the General Statistics Office, the area of newly planted forests concentrated in the country in March 2024 is estimated at 19.2 thousand hectares, an increase of 0.9% over the same period last year. Due to heavy rainy weather, it affects the progress of afforestation in some localities. In addition to afforestation, the number of scattered forestry trees reached 10.5 million trees, an increase of 10.1% over the same period last year. Timber production in March 2024 reached 1,479.8 thousand m3, up 7% over the same period last year.
Due to the increase in the price of raw wood, many localities have accelerated the exploitation progress such as: Quang Ngai increased by 37.5%; Nghe An increased by 23.8%; Tuyen Quang increased by 21.1%...
Generally, in the first quarter of 2024, the area of newly planted forests nationwide is estimated at 37.3 thousand hectares, down 1.4% over the same period last year; the number of scattered planted forestry trees was estimated at 23.6 million trees, an increase of 3.6%. Timber output in the first 3 months of this year is estimated at 3,670.1 thousand m3, up 4.6% over the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2024, the country had 252.3 hectares of damaged forests, an increase of 0.3% over the same period last year. In which: the area of felled and destroyed forests is 182.2 hectares, an increase of 1.1%; the area of burned forests was 70.1 hectares, down 1.9% over the same period last year.
AQUACULTURE GROWS POSITIVELY
For the fisheries industry, the General Statistics Office said that seafood harvested in March 2024 was estimated at 725.4 thousand tons, up 2.4% over the same period last year. Including: Fish reached 539.7 thousand tons, up 2.2%; shrimp reached 73.6 thousand tons, up 3.7%; other aquatic products reached 112.1 thousand tons, up 2.8% compared to March 2023.
Aquaculture activities achieved positive results due to the application of an effective high-quality shrimp farming model, fishery exploitation increased over the same period due to favorable weather in fishing grounds. The output of aquaculture harvested in March 2024 is estimated at 400.3 thousand tons, up 3.9% over the same period last year. In which: Fish reached 290.4 thousand tons, up 3.7%; shrimp reached 61.7 thousand tons, up 4.4% compared to March 2023.
"Generally, in the first quarter of 2024, the total harvested seafood production is estimated at 1,941.5 thousand tons, up 2.2% over the same period last year. Including: Fish reached 1,440.8 thousand tons, up 2%; shrimp reached 193 thousand tons, up 3.9%; other aquatic products reached 307.7 thousand tons, up 2% compared to the first quarter of 2023".
According to the General Statistics Office.
Pangasius production harvested in March 2024 increased compared to the same period last year, due to the increase in the price of raw pangasius and exports to the two main markets, the United States and the European Union, which are promising. Pangasius production in March 2024 is estimated at 149.1 thousand tons, up 3.4% over the same period last year.
The harvested shrimp production in the month increased over the same period due to the application of intensive and semi-intensive white leg shrimp farming models, which are developing positively, bringing high economic efficiency, so people and businesses promote farming activities. The output of white leg shrimp in the month was estimated at 40.1 thousand tons, up 5% over the same period last year; black tiger shrimp production reached 17.8 thousand tons, up 2.6%.
Fishery production in March 2024 is estimated at 325.1 thousand tons, up 0.7% over the same period last year.
